Sahay Foundation & Parateacher Welfare Organisation Raise Voice for Para-Teachers’ Rights in West Bengal

Kolkata, West Bengal —
In a significant move to address the long-standing grievances of para-teachers in West Bengal, the Sahay Foundation, led by its Secretary Dr. Abdus Salam Shaikh, joined hands with the Parateacher Welfare Organisation to organise a press conference at the Press Club Kolkata. The meeting brought together prominent dignitaries, social activists, and education advocates, all united in their commitment to resolving the critical salary-related challenges faced by para-teachers in the state’s government schools.

Background of the Issue

Para-teachers — contractual teaching staff employed in government schools — form an essential part of the state’s education system. Despite their crucial role in shaping the future of students, many of them face severe financial insecurity due to low honorariums, irregular payment cycles, and lack of service benefits.
Over the years, numerous representations have been made to the state authorities, but the issues have persisted, affecting the morale and livelihood of thousands of educators.

The Press Conference

During the press meet, Dr. Abdus Salam Shaikh stressed the urgency of addressing the matter:

“Education is the backbone of our society, and para-teachers are its unsung heroes. Their dedication deserves fair pay and timely support. We cannot allow the teaching community to struggle while they work tirelessly for our children’s future.”

Speakers from the Parateacher Welfare Organisation presented detailed statistics, case studies, and personal testimonies, highlighting how the current pay structure not only undervalues the work of para-teachers but also discourages skilled educators from continuing in the profession.

Key Demands Put Forward

  1. Revision of Salary Structure to ensure wages are at par with the cost of living.
  2. Service Benefits & Job Security similar to permanent teaching staff.
  3. Immediate announcement of the Government Order (G.O.) to benefit the Parateachers.

Call to Action

The gathering concluded with a collective call for the West Bengal government to take immediate and concrete steps towards resolving these issues. The organisations pledged to continue their advocacy efforts through legal measures, public awareness campaigns, and dialogue with policymakers.

Why This Matters

The plight of para-teachers is not just an employment issue — it’s a matter of educational quality and social justice. By ensuring that educators receive fair treatment, we invest directly in the quality of learning for future generations.

📢 Sahay Foundation and the Parateacher Welfare Organisation have urged citizens, parents, and civil society to stand in solidarity with para-teachers, amplifying their voices until justice is served.
